I'd like to share that Morgan and I sat and played outside for about 45 minutes today. I felt my vitamin D increase. :)

All our talk about the irony of Seattle having a warmer winter this year--apparently it snowed today in RR. So there you go. :) I think we're better off here. I definitely feel a difference.

The daffodils sound lovely. I've been enjoying the fact that I woke up to pure sunlight this morning and birds chirping. I know it's still too cold to go outside much here, but at least the clouds are gone and spring is on the horizon. And happy baby coos. Those make me smile.

Adrian, a little bird told me once that you don't eat lunch while a work. I thought that explained the tendency for the second dinner. How does that factor into your new choices? Any thoughts about just eating the second dinner around noon?

How fun! Cracks me up that Morgan fell asleep cuddling a lemon. :D

You might like a book called Hungry Monkey: A Food-Loving Father's Quest to Raise an Adventurous Eater, by Matthew Amster-Burton. It's a sort of food memoir about a restaurant-critic dad's adventures in giving his daughter a wide variety of foods from an early age, and includes some cool recipes, too. I recall that there's a small amount of foul language here and there, but if you're not too bothered by that, I think you'd like it! It's quite a funny and enjoyable read. Check your local library.

Cute! Yes, I always had a little trouble with the thought of sticking my child in a sink....thank goodness for Soft Scrub! There's the nursery clean up song, that one's always good. But a cooking song...don't have one for that yet.

So much fun watching them learn new things! Be careful with leafy veggies. Our doctor told us Angie still cannot have any leafy veggies, whole nuts or popcorn due to their difficulty to swallow being a choking hazard and the also do not dissolve well. Happy eating.

Help me piiiiick some!

Great picture! I can't get my kids in to most citrus, but Grant loves tangerines. Andrew is another story. I figure I'm doing well just to get them to eat some fruit, which is obviously a vast improvement over me. :)

House hunting is so exhausting! But I bet as a buyer you have some good options in that area. Where are you guys looking? Not that I know the area really well or anything, I was just wondering if you're thinking Mesa, or one of the other areas. You guys need to go eat at Aunt Chiladas (hah!) in Mesa...that's one of the places we always went when we were down there. The food is fine, but we mainly went because of the silly name. Ahhh, Phoenix...good times. We have got to get out there next year.

Isn't it the greatest feeling ever when a dream of yours finally comes true? While I hope you get to have him autograph something for you next year, that picture will still top it. Love to the family!

Oh my gosh! That is SO awesome. John would be so jealous, he loves Mark Grace (though he still loves the Cubs too, even though they torment him :). See, this is why we need to live in Arizona. What a great experience!

My goodness, and I have been thinking that you were all settled by now. Yikes! You guys deserve some kind of reward for making it through all of that. You will be really thrilled to know that the weather in Seattle has continued to be perfect. It has been warm and sunny and no rain, isn't life sometimes horribly ironic?

Sounds like quite an adventure. We were in town until Monday. Hope you guys like it better there. If you need anything Andy's Sister Karen and her family and Andy's Mom lives in Anthem a suburb of Phoenix. They are always willing to lend a helping hand and know lots of people around Phoenix. Watch out for scorpions while you move, especially if you move into a home that has been vacant. That is when you would run into them the most.

*gasp!* Phoenix?! Awesome!!! Quite a switch from Seattle - I'm looking forward to hearing all about your adventures. I really like Phoenix, and I hope you will, too. Darn, though - I'm coming to Seattle in April and was hoping to see you guys! Maybe we'll cross paths in California again one of these days.

On the difficulty of change - Em, I totally feel you. But having just gone through a life-changing move, let me say that if you feel it's right, then don't worry about it at all! Heavenly Father knows what we need more than we do, and there may - nay, more like there will - be people with whom your life path needed to intersect on this fun journey of life. You and Adj are awesome, and there's no doubt that amazing things are ahead for your little family. Can't wait to hear what Arizona has in store!

Isn't it amazing (especially in the first year of life) to see how much they learn, and how quickly? It just blows my mind sometimes. If only we kept up that rate of learning.

Hooray for Phoenix! Maybe next year we'll make it out there to see the Cubs at spring training...I really miss that tradition. I told John it's too bad we didn't move to Phoenix. Not that we were ever really close or anything, but we'd talked about it a lot. That kind of move has got to be stressful, so good luck...I'll keep you guys in my prayers. And yes, just pack up the kitchen and forget cooking. Get some Chipotle...that's always my answer! Hehe.

Why are you guys moving? Did Adrian change jobs? We loved Phoenix in May, but July was really, really, really hot. If you like to cool down. We (the kids) really liked the fountains near the Stadium (I think that was in Glendale). Aunt Connie lives in Buckeye. Good luck on the move.

Wow, what a way to start the new year!! Don't stress about what you didn't do over the holidays...you recovered from being sick and I'm sure Morgan had a great time regardless!!

Good luck with your move and hopefully you can stay settled for a while and not have to worry about packing up your kitchen for a long time!!

Ooh, please let us know how you like AZ. That's one we seriously consider after school. I have a real fear of the intense heat though...

Good luck on packing and finding a new place to make memories!

Mommy guilt...inevitable. It's always good to be aware of the good things you're doing and not focus on the guilt. Very cute that Morgan likes to help you sew. Great pictures!

Mommy guilt is powerful, but you're doing great! So banish it! Just take it all one day at a time. Enjoy it the best you can because soon she'll be a big girl!

How exciting! Those fancy schmancy machines do amazing stuff, though I'm definitely not to the point of being able to use one. :) May you enjoy sewing many a project!

I'm excited to see what you're making, and what you do with your fancy new machine. My mother-in-law's machine does embroidery and she makes us all sorts of fun stuff with it. I've been sewing a lot too with my new machine (pretty simple stuff because I'm still learning), I just still need to blog about it.

Love the cow/horse costume, Morgan looks so cute! And those balloons look great, I'll have to remember that for next year. The boys got their pumpkins carved, but mine only got gutted and then I never had time to carve it...oh well, I'm really bad at it anyway. :)

Wow, I LOVE that fabric! So cute! I love cloth bins like that, though the ones we have are store bought and not nearly as cute. But seeing as how I can't sew (yet alone alter patterns!) store bought had to do for us. :) I also love the pillow, the button is perfect! Bravo. I really wish I could sew, but every time I end up getting SO angry, it's just not good.

It's great that you finished a project you started when you were 15, it shows dedication. :) Maybe it's not too late for me to finish up some things...

Nice to see her enjoying the blocks. I guess the 32 year-old germs from Adrian are dead by now. He played with them a lot for years. It's so nice to see Morgan growing through the pictures on the blog. Thank goodness for modern technology or us poor grandparents wouldn't be able to keep abreast of all the funs things she is going through....except for the blotchy skin and milk allergies. You both seem to be doing great as parents. Keep up the good work.

You weren't drinking milk? Can you understand why I might find that hard to believe?

Morgan's about at that "I need Mommy" age. Do you remember Melissa around this age? Lisa Coates watched her one night (no one else would) and Melissa screamed until she passed out. Hmmm...some things never change.

But Morgan is adorable, and I am making her something really cute!

Thanks for the support Emily. I just haven't had time to research all on my own, and while I have yet to do that...I really don't see why it is necessary to inject sooo much into one tiny body at once. I know I got the shots and I turned out okay- but I just like to give my little guy a chance to not be completely miserable for a day or two after shots. We'll see how much reserach I can actually do?! Tyler has had all of his- but spaced out. Morgan is getting so big. There are days that I can focus on the fun and other days when I'm laying down to bed and realize I had to "teach" Tyler ALL DAY and I missed the fun stuff that Jacob is doing. He's 6 mos now! Crazy how time flies. You guys look like you're doing well. Hope that's the case!

Hooray for a Morgan update! What cute pictures. Poor thing, teething and a milk allergy. Definitely hard being a baby. I always feel bad watching them in pain, and knowing that they don't understand what's going on. That milk allergy sounds awful! Not that this is nearly as bad, but when I was nursing Grant, dairy really bothered his tummy, so I cut it out for awhile. You don't realize how much dairy is in until you have to do that. And then if you had to do wheat and soy on top of that...tough. I have a friend whose son has celiac disease (can't have gluten) and wow...it's hard to automatically not be able to eat so many things. Anyway, I'm rambling now.

I'm guessing you're pretty tired if Morgan hasn't been feeling well and she's mommy attached lately...hope you're managing to get some sleep.

P.S. Love those big wooden blocks! I've been trying to find some, I guess it's time to buy off the internet.

I really wish the midwives here would have been better- I ended up transferring to an OB/GYN because I kept having bad experience after bad experience with them... You are so lucky to have a birthing center nearby! Do you realize how lucky you are?

And I don't know if I would have gotten through my back labor without being on my hands and knees. That was the worst pain of my life. yikes.

I love your random pregnancy thoughts :) keep 'em coming!

I must say, when you first got pregnant and were talking about the midwife/birthing center thing, I kind of thought it was crazy. BUT, after following your blog through the entire process, my mind opened to the possibility of it. Then I watched "The Business of Being Born" and became convinced that the hospital might be the WORST place to deliver. I started researching birthing centers in the area...just for future reference (I'm not pregnant or anything, I just like to be prepared)...and found one here in Costa Mesa. I'm almost convinced that I'll use it...EXCEPT, I'm almost 100% sure I'm going to have a huge 10lb+ baby (I totally blame Ryan for that one), so "natural" scares me A LOT. BUT, when the time comes, I will weigh my options...do more reseach an all that.

I'm just really glad you shared your experience because now I feel that when the time comes, I have options. Before this, I wasn't willing to explore any option that didn't involve a hospital.

Thanks for the tip! I've been going to the midwives here (my insurance is actually with an HMO, but they have 7 midwives as part of the clinic I visit that share a practice), and have really liked the experience so far. They gave me the option off the bat to start seeing an OB/GYN or the midwives, and I picked the midwives because they do spend more time with you and just seem more approachable (and less likely to do c-sections, which seem to happen really frequently with the drs. here). We don't have a birthing center or anything cool like that(Illinois is not quite as progressive, I guess), but the hospital here provides lots of birthing options, including water birth. I've been reading up on the pros and cons of natural versus epidural lately. I like the idea of going drug free in theory, but I'm worried that I might give in when the pain kicks in, especially since I will be in a place that offers just about any option. I've really appreciated your take on natural/water birth--and would really appreciate any more of your insights (either in a comment or via email).

How fun! I meant to take the boys to pick berries, but I waited too long. So now I guess it will be apple picking instead. I love the picture of Morgan eating the tomato plant.:)

I look forward to growing a garden too, but seeing as how I've this far been incapable of keeping plants alive...who knows how it will go. The only success I've had is with herbs, but those are so easy that I don't even feel like they count.

You must have been reading Walden recently.

I learned about an interesting sell out recently--Trader Joe's is owned by a German company of discount grocery stores called Aldi. We don't have a TJ's in town here, but we have two Aldis, and it is a completely different kind of store (they have the cheapest prices in town, but it feels like shopping in a dank warehouse).

Does it have to be a cave? I'll join you if it's a deserted tropical island.

I absolutely LOVE the one where she has the magazine article stuffed in her mouth! Hilarious. I'm sure some day she'll be embarrassed by that picture, but for now, it's precious. :) Your beautiful pictures of her have convinced me to buy a nice camera (and learn to use it) when I have a baby. Those pics are priceless.

I love cataloging my favorite MSL articles, too--although I haven't really used any since I started the project over a year ago. Hmmmm. Maybe when I have kids that are a little more grown up then it will be nice to have folders with the various holiday ideas.

These look SOOOO good! I love them. And most of my pics of Ella in our home are in the same spot too... it's nice having a neutral sofa, isn't it! At least you have enough light that you can get some great ones!

And with the overexposed pic, it actually doesn't bother me much (from a critical standpoint) because her eyes are the focus... if you shot in JPEG there's nothing you can do, if you shot RAW you may be able to recover some of the blown bits, but probably not. So don't stress. I love that last one too! Well done.

So refreshing! I'm happy to see I'm not the only one who feels this way. And yes, I'm sure you'll laugh looking back just as you laugh looking back at single life thinking you were busy. I can't even imagine what the next 20 years hold. Busy busy.

And that stock looks glorious. I keep meaning to try making my own stock- mostly because I want to make wagamama chicken ramen, and I'm sure I'd be able to tell the difference. mmmm. wagamamas.

You know Emily, a few years ago I would have read your posts about midwives, sewing, Tom's shoes, and handmade gifts and shook my head in confusion. Now, I'm so on board with all those things. I want to eat natural, fresh, organic foods grown locally, I want to homeschool my children, and grow my own garden. I want to take up sewing again and maybe raise a few chickens. Heck, I even want to give birth naturally with a midwife and use cloth diapers. So it's always a delight to read your blog and see what things you are interested in and how you are raising your child because they reflect my current desires. I'm getting into the pre-nesting mode (as in, I'm planning on getting pregnant sometime in the next year), and I'd love to pick your brain about the books, websites, and blogs you like and the products that you use. I just don't know where to begin! So even though I don't comment a lot, just know that I love reading about what you are doing. I'm taking lots of notes. (No pressure, of course.) ;-)

My sister is making knitted jewelry (http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=7703523), and she recently was a vendor at Renegade Craft Fair, a huge fair in San Francisco where people sold every type of handmade thing you could possibly want, and then some. I went to help her out, and it was really neat to see people valuing things that a single person put time and effort into. I think I showed considerable restraint by only buying three things. :)

I've heard of them, but never seen them. Such a wonderful idea. Every little bit helps.
They do look rather comfy, though my feet still protest the thought of being in anything besides sandals right now. :) Chipotle sounds really good right about now....we get to go back and get free burritos tomorrow, so exciting.

Great ideas. Sewing clothes for children is a lot of fun. Just a little fabric and some elastic and you have a cute pair of pants. I think the ruffles will give them your personal touch. Good for you. I like your sense of adventure.

Mmm they look tasty! We've had the pains au chocolate a couple times and I love 'em! We also like the $1.99 (or something close to that) apple pastries (not the blossoms). So good!

Yea, you have nothing to worry about with sewing clothes. If you can sew straight lines, you can sew clothes- no problems. And I think the ruffles will be darling! There's nothing like a little girl tooshie with ruffles :)

Good for you for still doing the cloth diapers! I gave up on them when I started having issues with finding clothes to fit over them.

I love the books, too. What a great idea--and an awesome learning tool for baby. I love the cloth balls, too. I think I would even play with them as an adult.

Cute!! I LOVE the books, I'm gonna have to get me some.

Good luck with the clothes sewing (I'm sure you'll do a great job, your sewing is always awesome), it seems like quite the undertaking. I have a friend who sews tons of outfits for her little girls and I just don't know how she does it. But seeing as how most of my attempts at sewing end with me wanting to scream and throw my sewing machine, it's probably not something I'll ever attempt. :)

I love handmade. Those flowers are so beautiful. Oh, and by the way, I love the coasters you made and sent...this is a very delayed response, but thank you. They're lovely! I love that cheerful yellow fabric.

And hooray for blog updates...perhaps I should work on that too. :)

Well said, Emily - it's so true! There's something special about knowing that someone put the time and creative energy into making a necklace or apron or whatever by hand as opposed to one slapped out in mass production. Love it!

Hi Emily, I was in hopes that you might share the recipe for bialys. I love trying new recipes. I also love bread baking. I have used your recipe for the veges and pasta you gave one time. I check your blog at least a couple of times a week as well as check on Elder Hefler. I am so proud of him. Cathy isn't the only one counting down the days until he comes home. I will be there too.
Till later, Grammom
